RESEARCH: Monstrous Feminine Theory
The Monstrous Feminine Theory- Barbara Creed
Barbara Creed is a feminist who has researched how women are portrayed specifically in horror/slasher films, particularly how women pose a threat to men. She believes and has a theory that women are presented negatively and monster-like in the horror genre, due to a females reproductive and motherly nature. She constructed her theory using Freud's psychological theory.
She concludes that there are 7 types of female monstrosity;
- Archaic mother
- Monstrous womb
- Vampire
- Witch
- Possessed mother
- Deadly feminine castratrice
- The castrating mother
Creed analysed many films in the horror genre including 'Carrie' (1976). She interpreted the pig's blood pouring down on Carrie as a symbol for menstrual blood. The blood being a pig's blood degrades a female as she is being compared to an animal which is typically viewed as being 'filthy'.

RESEARCH: Research Rationale
Research Rationale
For my research rationale I have considered the age range of the people who are going to be involved in my research. The age range will be people aged between 16-28, this is because I have access to people between the ages of 16-28 which makes conducting my research easier. I will have access to pupils aged between 16-18 and teachers, friends and family who will also fit the age range. The age-range I have chosen is because the horror trailer that I will make will be aimed towards people aged between 16-28. The age-range is quite wide which allows me to have a mixture of opinions as well as seeing what the most popular theme of horror is.
To carry out my research I will create my own questionnaire which will specifically have questions that will help me understand what to include in my final horror product/s. The questionnaire will be made on 'Typeform', this website allows me to have a variety of different ways to collect data which is very useful. The types of questions that will be included in my survey will be; what sub-genre of horror appeals to you?, what is the most important element in horror?, what horror poster is the most effective? etc. I'd also like to film the age-range that I've chosen reacting to several different types of horror trailers and asking questions after to see what is the most effective and why. I will then use the information I have collected and create my horror product based on what my target audience would like to see in a horror trailer.
In addition to the research I will conduct I may carry out another questionnaire which will include more qualitative data. I'd like to do this as I want more opinion based answers, if I know exactly what my target audience prefers it will benefit me in creating a successful horror product.
